I intend to shed some much needed light on this subject and show you just why wellness is vitally important to your daily life.
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language defines wellness as:
The condition of good physical and mental health, especially when actively maintained by proper diet, exercise, and avoidance of risky behaviors.”
This definition is a good start. It includes, but is limited to, physical AND mental health. It speaks of actively working towards wellness. It mentions avoiding ‘risky behaviors’ but only includes proper diet and exercise as the assumed good behaviors.
Oxford Dictionary of Sports Science & Medicine takes the concept a bit further stating that wellness is:
A condition obtained when a person achieves a level of health that minimizes the chances of becoming ill. Wellness is achieved by a combination of emotional, environmental, mental, physical, social, and spiritual health.”
This a far more encompassing definition adding emotional, environmental, social and spiritual health along with physical and mental health. It implies that a focus on these helps one achieve a higher level of health that reduces illness.
Breaking It Down
Now we understand what wellness is but you are likely still confused about how to achieve wellness or why it is even important. That’s understandable. Simply put, Wellness is a condition of optimal physical, mental, and spiritual well being. It is a combination of your physical health, your mental outlook, and your spiritual life.
The truth is, wellness is not a simple concept and it is not easy to achieve. If it were easy, America’s health care system would not be ranked 37th in the world, antidepressants medications wouldn’t be America’s most prescribed drugs and spiritual confusion would not abound. Unfortunately, this is the world in which we live. It does not represent wellness at any level and, further, it is not a uniquely American problem either. So, what can you do about it?
First, get knowledge. Lean what real health is all about. Discover how to empower yourself with a true wellness lifestyle. Use this website (and others like it) as a resource. But don’t stop there! Gaining knowledge is only the beginning.

Get wisdom. Learn how to apply this knowledge in order to achieve the best results. Spend some time introspectively identifying WHY Achieving Wellness is important to you. It is not just about the way you look and the way you feel. It’s about having the ability to live your life the way you want. It’s about having the ability to be the Mom or Dad that your kids deserve, to be the wife or husband that your spouse deserves, and being able to enjoy the simple moments that make up our daily lives.
Stop sitting on the side lines watching life pass you by! Stop allowing your physical health to interfere with the life you want to live. You can be well! Understand that it won’t happen over night but you can do it. It won’t be easy but the lifetime of rewards make it well worth the effort.
