If you have celiac disease, then you are nearly twice as likely to develop CAD – coronary artery disease. This link was demonstrated in a large retrospective study presented at the American College of Cardiology 2014 Scientific Sessions last week.

Celiac disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive system. It damages the lining of the small intestine. As a result, absorption of important nutrients is severely inhibited. This damage is caused by an inflammatory reaction due to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye.
Celiac disease was also linked to a 1.4 times greater risk of stroke. In past studies, celiac disease has been linked to arrhythmias and possible heart failure. This new study links celiac disease with CAD. This link appeared even in the absence of traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Jessica Savage, MD, from Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts is the lead investigator in this research. Certain phytoestrogens in flax seeds and soybeans are being attributed to this relief.
Lignan phytoestrogens, found particularly in flaxseeds, have been shown to scavenge hydroxyl radicals and cause fatty acid peroxidation. Isoflavone phytoestrogens, found mainly in soybeans, have shown signs of reducing allergic airway inflammation. These anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects are what afford these foods the natural ability to help control the symptoms of asthma and allergy.

Migraine headache pain can be searing and is often debilitating. It frequently causes frustrating visits to the emergency room as well. The way we eat, the way that we exercise and even the way that we think can cause inflammation to run out of control in our bodies. Coronary heart disease is the #1 killer in the United States. Accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths, it takes the lives of 600,000 people every year!(1) According the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report(2), heart disease has been the leading cause of death since 1921.
