Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different?”
Happy Father’s Day!
Here is a little history. The idea of Father’s Day was conceived slightly over a century ago by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, WA, while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. A day in June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration June 17, 1910, proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of Smart’s birth.
The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.
Many forces influence your child’s health. From television commercials and programs, the internet, teachers and parents, your children receive input from many areas that will shape their attitudes toward health. You, as the parent, have the ability to have the strongest influence. Modeling healthy behaviors for your kids is the best way for them to learn and adopt healthy habits for themselves.
Have you ever thought about whether Mom or Dad has the biggest impact on your child’s health? Traditionally, mothers tend to have the greatest influence in the earlier years of child development. However, when it comes to healthy weight, recent research actually shows that fathers have the biggest impact.
That’s right Dad’s! It is time to step up to the plate and make sure that you are modeling a healthy weight and healthy habits that produce this lifestyle for your kids. Here are some tips to help you out.
If we are creating ourselves all the time, then it is never too late to begin creating the bodies we want instead of the ones we mistakenly assume we are stuck with.”

It’s summertime and millions of Americans are excited to spend hours outdoors at the beach, sunny parks and beautiful bike trails. At the same time, sun protection and fear of skin cancer is a major concern as well. Have you wondered if lathering up with the highest SPF sunscreen is really the best option? Are you concerned about the chemicals in traditional SPF suncreens?
I am definitely looking forward to spending some long afternoons at the beach with my family. However, as with most other activities, our wellness lifestyle causes us to buck the traditional trends. We avoid chemical-laden sunscreen lotions and practice sun protection from the inside out!
I love smoothies! I am always looking for new, fresh ways to include more whole foods into my diet. Smoothies are a great way to do just that. These recipes are fun and delicious. They are even kid-friendly! My six year old son is a bit of a picky eater, as most kids are at this age. Smoothies are a good way to make sure he gets the whole food, healthy nutrition that his growing body needs.
Question: What ideas do you have to help your family get more healthy nutrition?
